On Sunday, June 22, 2014, Brother Matthew Tonini, O. Carm. professed his simple vows  of obedience, poverty and chastity in the Carmelite Order at The National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Melbourne, Australia. Brother Matthew recently returned to Australia after completing his Novitiate at Brandsma Priory, Middletown, New York, where we all got to know him very well. Brother Matthew is a gifted singer, and served as the cantor at many of our liturgical celebrations, notably the 125th Anniversary Mass of the arrival of the Carmelites in New York, offered by Timothy Cardinal Dolan in March.

Surrounded by his family, Carmelites from Australia and Timor Leste and parishioners, Brother Matthew made his profession during a beautiful concelebrated Mass. After making his vows he received the white cloak, which Carmelites wear on special occasions, as a sign of his membership in the Order. Congratulations Brother! It was wonderful having you in the Middletown novitiate!
